What are digestive issues?
The digestive system is a complex part of your body that’s responsible for breaking down and absorbing essential nutrients as well as releasing waste. Problems in your digestive system can lead to a host of disruptive symptoms, such as chronic constipation or diarrhea.
The team at Gain Wellness Center treats many digestive issues, including:
Food sensitivities
A food sensitivity or intolerance occurs when you have a hard time digesting a certain food, such as dairy. This may cause symptoms such as gas, abdominal pain, or diarrhea. A food sensitivity is different from a food allergy, which involves the immune system.
Leaky gut syndrome
Leaky gut syndrome develops when the lining of your intestines is more permeable than it should be. This allows bacteria and toxins to pass into your bloodstream, causing a wide variety of symptoms, including:
- Fatigue
- Skin problems
- Headaches
- Widespread inflammation
- Chronic constipation, diarrhea, or bloating
Leaky gut syndrome is not yet recognized as a diagnosable condition by mainstream medicine.
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
Sometimes called blind loop syndrome, SIBO occurs when there’s an abnormal increase in the bacteria population of your small intestine. This can lead to loss of appetite, unintentional weight loss, and abdominal pain.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
IBS is a common digestive issue that causes chronic constipation or diarrhea. Other symptoms may include cramping, gas, and bloating.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Also called acid reflux, GERD occurs when stomach acid flows back into the tube that connects it to your mouth. Acid reflux causes a burning sensation in your chest, commonly called heartburn.

What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine is an evidence-based approach to help identify the underlying root cause of a symptom rather than just relieving the symptom. It is a patient-centered care that incorporates the best diagnostic tests and tools from conventional medicine to find imbalances that are at the root of all illness. It addresses the whole person and engages both patient and the practitioner in a therapeutic health partnership.Functional Medicine looks at every individual and considers your unique life experiences and factors including the individual’s genes, environment, and lifestyle. It addresses the root cause rather than symptom suppression, which helps practitioners address the underlying cause of the disease and promote optimal wellness. As a result, a personalized treatment plan is created for each individual based on their health history and health concerns that lead to improved patient outcomes.
